This workshop features intensive study of one complete opera from the standard repertoire. For the spring 2019 the opera will be Mozart's Cosi fan Tutte. During this twelve (12) week program, our focus will be to discover and develop the character of a complete role understanding how to sing recitative freely, and investigating your character and their part in the drama. The participants will begin with sessions of pure music followed by staging. We study the score and the text to find the relationship between the characters and as they relate to the background of the drama, the time-period of the drama as well as the composition, and, finally, the emotional and, at times, spiritual motivations of the characters.
Roles: Fiordiligi, Dorabella, Despina, Fernardo, Gugliemo, Don Alfonso
During the workshops:
participants will work on a selected role.
Coaching and rehearsal of assigned character (there is no teaching of vocal technique).
Language coaching for their assigned roles
this opera will be worked on musically and dramatically.
this opera will be performed in a workshop performance at the end of the 12 week session.
Enrollment is limited to give each participant the maximum time for study and preparation.
Over the length of the program, you will cover:
language and diction
the correct singing of recitatives
improvisation and acting for singers
This 10-Week workshop will begin on January 20, 2019 and will meet every Sunday from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. The workshop will be begin with three weeks of music rehearsals and then the opera will be staged. All participants are required to attend all sessions. During the later part of the sessions, the casts will rehearse separately. You are expected to arrive with a knowledge of the music as by the end of the workshop your part must be memorized and performance ready.
All participants will:
Prepare their own translations of the texts
Research and be prepared to discuss the literary and historical background of the opera while paying special attention to their own character.
Explore their character's back story and emotional stability during the opera.
How does your character fit into the opera as a whole? We study the score and the text to find the relationship between the characters and as they relate to the background of the drama, the time-period of the drama as well as the composition, and, finally, the emotional and, at times, spiritual motivations of the characters.
At the end of this workshop, on May 4 and May 5, 2019 each participant will take part in a performance of Mozart's Cosi fan Tutte accompanied by a chamber orchestra.
An audition is required for this workshop.
The price of the workshop is $950.
Deborah Surdi/Stephen Anthony
SAS Performing Arts Studios is proud to welcome Deborah Surdi to our staff. She brings to her work a background as a professionally trained soprano who has sung many leading roles including, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, Fiordiligi in Cosi fan Tutte, Mimi in La Boheme and Leonora in Il Trovatore. She has also been successful as as a stage director, coach, and voice teacher. Debbie is a seasoned executive in the classical music industry. She has served previously as Vice President of Artists and Repertoire for Sony BMG Masterworks, whose labels include RCA Red Seal, Columbia Masterworks and Sony Classical. Debbie is extremely busy as Executive director of Teatro Nuovo amd The Martina Arroyo Foundation. In 2007 she was appointed as the Executive Director of The Opera Orchestra of New York.
Stephen Anthony is a musicologist, conductor, director and author. Mr. Anthony has directed many fully staged operas including, Carmen, Tosca, La Bohème, and Cosi fan Tutte as well as Musicals such as Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods and Bernstein’s Candide.
Among the works he has conducted include Beethoven’s Symphony no. 9 in D minor, Handel’s Messiah, Puccini’s Tosca, and Mozart's Don Giovanni.
At Arizona State University, he taught classes on Opera, American Musical Theater, and Stephen Sondheim. Stephen studied Operatic and Symphonic conducting at The Julliard School of Music under the tutelage of the late Vincent La Selva.
All sessions meet from 1:30pm - 4:30pm.
The participants obligation is for the full time period of the workshop. All payments for workshops are non-refundable except in the event of a workshop cancellation.
If you need to cancel a workshop or workshop session, for any reason, you must notify us by email no later than one week before the workshop or workshops session is scheduled. If you discontinue any workshop before the ending date of the session, you forfeit the deposit amount.
