The Musical World of

Stephen Sondheim

Weekend Workshop:

The Musical World of Stephen Sondheim

Weekend Workshop

February 22-23, 2020

For all the recognition accorded his brilliance, some conventional wisdom

still believes that Sondheim’s work doesn't and will not attract a broad

popular audience because his lyrics are too intellectual, his music too technically difficult, his characters too unpleasant, and his world view too cynical.

This workshop will face these challenges and discover how to approach a Stephen Sondheim song, scene or character and discover the nuances in them.

This workshop includes:

  • Intensive study (with piano) of repertoire selected from the Stephen Sondheim musical canon

    • individual songs or scenes

    • each participant will bring a song that they want to work on and will be pre-assigned on additional scenes to study and perform

    • Repertory is carefully selected based on voice type and experience level

    • Workshop is limited in the number of participants to allow maximum time with the staff

The Weekend Intensive Format:

Saturday (11am-6pm) focuses on:

  • the history of Stephen Sondheim on the Broadway stage

  • the performers will learn how to incorporate their individual voice and experiences in the character that the actor has prepared for the class.

  • delve into the character by learning how to answer the 5 W's (Who, What, Where, When, and Why)

  • Participants will begin the preparation of complete scenes to be presented in the Sunday Concert.

  • Individual and group coaching

Sunday (11am-6pm) will continue to:
