For all the recognition accorded his brilliance, some conventional wisdom
still believes that Sondheim’s work doesn't and will not attract a broad
popular audience because his lyrics are too intellectual, his music too technically difficult, his characters too unpleasant, and his world view too cynical.
This workshop will face these challenges and discover how to approach a Stephen Sondheim song, scene or character and discover the nuances in them.
This workshop includes:
Intensive study (with piano) of repertoire selected from the Stephen Sondheim musical canon
individual songs or scenes
each participant will bring a song that they want to work on and will be pre-assigned on additional scenes to study and perform
Repertory is carefully selected based on voice type and experience level
Workshop is limited in the number of participants to allow maximum time with the staff
The Weekend Intensive Format:
Saturday (11am-6pm) focuses on:
the history of Stephen Sondheim on the Broadway stage
the performers will learn how to incorporate their individual voice and experiences in the character that the actor has prepared for the class.
delve into the character by learning how to answer the 5 W's (Who, What, Where, When, and Why)
Participants will begin the preparation of complete scenes to be presented in the Sunday Concert.
Individual and group coaching
Sunday (11am-6pm) will continue to:
participants will continue the prepare of scenes
Master Class with guest artist (TBA)
Concert by participants
Adequate time for meal breaks is given, though participants are responsible for their own meals.
The workshops are limited in attendance
A video is required for participation.
The Cost is $125.00

The participants obligation is for the full time period of the workshop. All payments for workshops are non-refundable except in the event of a workshop cancellation.
If you need to cancel a workshop or workshop session, for any reason, you must notify us by email no later than one week before the workshop or workshops session is scheduled. If you discontinue any workshop before the ending date of the session, you forfeit the deposit amount. As our faculty are all working professional actors and musicians, SAS Performing Arts Studios reserved the right to change teachers at any time due to last minute changes in their professional schedules.
