SAS Performing Arts Company and Studios, Inc. is very proud and honored to have two great international opera
personalities, Soprano Isola Jones and Mezzo SopranoTichina Vaughn together for an afternoon of education and conversation.
These two artists have performed in the greatest opera houses across the world including Vienna, Dresden Opera, Arena di Verona and, of course, The Metropolitan Opera. Miss Tichina Vaughn appears with SAS Performing Arts Company, Inc. courtsey of "The Metropolitan Opera."
Dr. Jones and KS Vaughn will work with some emerging young artists and then sit down for a discussion of their careers in the opera and academic worlds.
This will prove to be a very exciting and enjoyable afternoon.

Isola Jones is internationally recognized as an extraordinary artist.
Making her professional debut in the Verdi Requiem with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Ms. Jones within two years
made her Metropolitan Opera debut in the role of Olga in the opera Eugene Onegin. She has been paired with the great international artists Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras, Leontyne Price, and Joan Sutherland.
This internationally acclaimed artist can be heard on a number of opera and concert recordings such as
Wagner's Der Fliegende Hollander, Mahler’s Symphony # 8, and Les Noces, with the Chicago Symphony
Orchestra conducted by Sir Georg Solti and James Levine, respectively; the now famous recording of Porgy and Bess won the
Grammy Award for the best opera recording in 1976 with Lorin Maazel conducting the Cleveland
Symphony Orchestra; RCA’s Cavalleria Rusticana with James Levine conducting; The Metropolitan
Opera released a DVD of the original telecast of Verdi's Rigoletto featuring Isola Jones, Cornell MacNeil,
Ileana Cortrubas, Justino Diaz and Placido Domingo. In August of 2009 the Metropolitan Opera
Released another DVD of the original telecast of Cavalleria Rusticana featuring Isola Jones, Tatiana
Troyanos and Placido Domingo. In January of 2015 the Metropolitan Opera released another DVD
of Rigoletto featuring Louis Quilico, Ara Berberian and Luciano Pavarotti.
Ms. Jones has the honor and distinction of being the only African-American artist in history to sing
over 500 performances at the Metropolitan Opera and the first and only African American
featured artist in Ten (10) “Live from the Met” telecasts.
On March 25th 2012, Ms. Jones was honored as one of the 48 Most Intriguing Women of Arizona
which is now part of the Centennial Celebration of the state under the auspices of the Arizona Historical Society. Among the honorees were Cindy McCain, former Senator Gabby Giffords, and the late Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor,
On June 5, 2015 Ms. Jones was a recipient of the 2015 Positively Powerful Woman Award for
Arts and Cultural Leadership sponsored by Triad West Inc. which specializes in leadership,
alignment and breakthrough performance through diversity and inclusion.
Ms. Jones is now Dr. Isola Jones having earned the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts from Arizona State University on May 9, 2016.
Dr. Jones is currently member of the Voice Faculty at South Mountain Community College in Phoenix, Arizona where she has started an opera company, “Opera at the Mountain” with her students.
Mezzo soprano Tichina Vaughn began her career as a member of the Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Young Artist Program and has established an important presence among leading opera houses and concert halls around the world.
In the 2019-20 season, Tichina returned to the Metropolitan Opera for performances of Porgy and Bess before debuting at Theater an der Wien as the Fortune Teller in Prokofiev’s Fiery Angel.
Most recently in the 2018-19 season, Ms. Vaughn debuted at English National Opera and Dutch National Opera as Maria in a new production of PORGY AND BESS followed by a return to the Metropolitan Opera for performances in DIALOGUES DES CARMÉLITES led by Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Additionally Ms. Vaughn participated in the world premiere of CARUSO A CUBA with Dutch National Opera and in Cavalleria Rusticana with the NDR Philharmonie Klassik Open Air.
Highlights from Ms. Vaughn’s 2017/18 season include her critical success as Herodias in SALOME and Brigitta in DIE TOTE STADT at the Semperoper Dresden, followed by her return to the Metropolitan Opera for her role debut as the First Maid in Strauss Elektra led by Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
Ms. Vaughn made her Italian debut as Azucena IL TROVATORE under the baton of Nicola Luisotti at Teatro Verdi Trieste where she was later heard as Ulrica in UN BALLO IN MASCHERA, a role she also performed at Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, Teatro Massimo Palermo, Teatro delle Muse Ancona, Teatro Verdi Salerno, and Teatro Filarmonico Verona. She became a regular guest at the Arena di Verona where she performed more than 50 performances of Amneris in Franco Zeffirelli's AIDA as well as several performances of Azucena IL TROVATORE. Additional critically succesfful performances include Erda in DER RING DES NIBELUNGEN at Finnish National Opera, Augsburg Opera, and the State Opera Kassel and Venus in TANNHÄUSER at Hamburg State Opera, Mistress Quickly in FALSTAFF at Korean National Opera, as well as Klytemnestra in ELEKTRA, Zia Principessa in SUOR ANGELICA, and Princess Eboli in DON CARLO with Opera Frankfurt.
In North America Ms. Vaughn has appeared as Azucena IL TROVATORE with Sacramento Opera, Amneris AIDA with Michigan Opera Theater, Tulsa Opera, Seattle Opera, and Orange County Opera, Ulrica UN BALLO IN MASCHERA at San Francisco Opera, and La Frugola IL TABARRO with Los Angeles Opera.
In addition to her many operatic successes, Tichina Vaughn has performed symphonic concerts, chamber concerts, and recitals in many prestigious concert halls around the world. Featured works include Verdi Requiem, Beethoven 9th Symphony and Bernstein Jeremiah Symphony. Orchestras and conductors include the Berlin Philharmonic, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony, the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, the Taipei Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra Kennedy Center, the Jerusalem Symphony, the North Carolina Symphony, the Stuttgart Philharmonic,and the National Symphony of Ireland in collaboration with maestros James Conlon, Placido Domingo, James Levine, Fabio Luisi, Nicola Luisotti, Bobby McFerrin, Daniel Oren, Sir Simon Rattle, Mstislav Rostropovich, Nello Santi, and Omer Meir Welber.
Her discography includes the Stuttgart State Theater DER RING DES NIBELUNGEN which include her highly acclaimed appearances as Fricka DIE WALKÜRE and Waltraute DIE GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG which were filmed for the DVD distributed by Euro Arts and recorded for Naxos. In 2005 Tichina released her solo portrait CD entitled "Christmas at My House".
In addition to her title as Kammersängerin, Tichina Vaughn has received many awards and honors during her distinguished career including the Metropolitan Opera National Council Award, the Richard Tucker Foundation Study Grant Award, the Opera Index Vocal Competition Award, Licia Albanese Puccini Foundation Award, and a Birgit Nilsson Foundation Award. Most recently she was presented the Consul General's Award for Cultural Diplomacy from the Consulate General in Milan.
